Making Sense in Social Studies

I found a great activity for students to do with newspapers.

I found a note-taking worksheet online and had students partner up and read through the newspaper together. As they read the paper, they had to come up with 26 facts, with each fact beginning with a letter from the alphabet.

For example, in last Thursday´s paper, the letter H stood for the Halifax Humane society was holding NASCAR fundraiser and the letter P was for Punxsutawney Phil determining if there would be more winter weeks or if the spring would be coming. Students were instructed to write only facts and not just adjectives like fun fundraiser.

Students were encouraged to be creative with their facts and were allowed to write "Yoda-style" if needed. They ended the activity by summarizing their favorite fact from the newspaper and stating why they liked it so much.

This activity worked so well with my gifted students and regular ed. students. They were reading the newspaper and summarizing what they were reading in a creative way.
