Newspaper Synonym Assignment

Description of the Assignment:

Students will find an article in The Daytona Beach News-Journal (5 paragraphs minimum in length)

Students will read the article.

Students will then rewrite/retype the article in Microsoft Word.

Students will underline any unfamiliar words.

Students will then replace these words with synonyms to understand the meaning of unknown words.

The article is proofread and published.

Materials needed:
Newspaper
Computer with Microsoft Word and internet access www.dictionary.com for the online thesaurus
Printer

Sunshine State Standards:
LA.A.1.2.3-The student uses simple strategies to determine meaning and increase vocabulary for reading, including the use of prefixes, suffixes, root words, multiple meanings, antonyms, synonyms, and word relationships.
LA.A.1.3-The student uses the reading process effectively.
LA.A.2.3-The student constructs meaning from a wide variety of texts. (LA.A.2.3.6-uses a variety of reference materials, including indexes, magazines, newspapers, and journal; and tools, including card catalogs and computer catalogs, to gather information for research topics.
LA.B.1.3.3- The student produces final documents that have been edited for correct spelling; correct punctuation, including commas, colons, and semicolons; correct capitalization; effective sentence structure; correct common usage, including subject/verb agreement.

Other Newspaper Activities:

As a part of the Soft Skills Unit, students search the classified ads for employment. They must find 3 different types of jobs. Students type a cover letter and resume, based on the job that they chose. They will include any skills and characteristics that they currently have to perform for that particular job.

As a part of our TechnoCeo Project, students search The News-Journal for 5 different types of advertisements. They compare/contrast the ads. Once they have finished they create their own advertisement based on their fictitious business that they own.

LA.D.2.3. - The student understands the power of language.
LA.D 2.3.4- understands how the multiple media tools of graphics, pictures, color, motion, and music can enhance communication in television, film, radio, and advertising.
LA.D. 2.3.6-understands specific ways that mass media can potentially enhance or manipulate information.
LA.D.2.3.7-understands that laws exist that govern what can and cannot be done with mass media.
