Learning to Be Stewards
The newspaper is a multipurpose item in my classroom. My class is heavily weighted to the conservation and stewardship of the land side of Agriculture. The newspapers in my classroom are first used for an exercise about how Agriculture is all around us and how it impacts our daily lives. The students are broken up into groups of three, and then scan the newspaper for pertinent agriculture or environmental articles that impact agriculture industry in our area. They read the article thoroughly and develop a short commercial script about their article. They are allowed to use the excess newspaper to make props for their commercial and then they present the commercial to the class. They are graded on originality and sticking to the main focus of the article. They are instructed to devise the commercial in such a way that the other members of the class would want to read the article for themselves. It is amazing to see the level of enthusiasm for this exercise and after we are done, we break down the newspaper and shred it for our garden compost pile, our worm bin or use it in our "lasagna garden". We also use the larger pieces to make seedling/propagation pots for our planting. The good thing about the pots is that we don´t have to disturb roots to transplant seedlings outside and the newspaper will break down in the soil. Not only are we learning about agriculture in our news, but we are learning to be stewards of our land and local environment by not only words but also by our actions.
