Bright Ideas Lesson Plans

Mother Goose and Teacher for Sale

LESSON ONE: Students read a variety of newspaper articles after which we discuss the who, what, when, where and how in each article chosen. Next, the students are given a variety of Nursery Rhymes like Jack and Jill and The Three Little Pigs. They are asked to become reporters for THE MOTHER GOOSE FREE PRESS. Then, they select a nursery rhyme and write it out as an article for the newspaper. This includes a title such as Brother and Sister Injured on Smyrna Hill. Students are advised to use who, what, when, where and how. We discuss facts and opinions so that they include the proper facts in their articles. Also, I remind students about correct punctuation and grammar as they write their news article. The students can use these to print a creative classroom newspaper.

LESSON TWO: Students read through a variety of for sale and want-ads. Next, we discuss funny items to be sold or purchased. Then, the students are encouraged to write funny want ads or for sale ads. This is a fun activity for the student. Here are some examples they have written. For Sale: Teacher with 20 years experience only $100.00. Will consider throwing in desk. For Sale: LIKE NEW! One red Nike tennis shoe, size 11. Asking only $5.00.
