Scavenger Hunt
Teacher before class arrives and combs the newspaper for articles from different sections of the paper. Select key words or phrases from the article; they are given as clues in question form. Eight to ten clues/questions are written on board and the students then work either in groups of two or individually to find the clues to answer the questions. Expanded: Do the first five as the teacher and then have students create the next five and exchange them with another group. Select all the clues from one section, limiting the search area. Select key vocabulary words from the article titles and have defined by how they are used in context. Link titles by finding words that appear in the title of another article. Ex Iraq 5 Soldiers Wounded, another article Soldiers Arrive Home to Celebration, next article 100 Year Old Woman Celebrates Birthday. I call this chain reaction.
