Bright Ideas Lesson Plans
Newspaper Vocabulary Graffiti
I wanted to combine a vocabulary review with a newspaper activity one day and came up with this idea. The students liked it because it gave them a chance to get up, move around and talk. I like it because it gives me a chance to assess whether the students actually know the meaning and appropriate application of their vocabulary and it requires them to practice reading skills and critical thinking skills. 1. Vocabulary words are posted around the room on chart paper. 2. Students are divided into teams-as many teams as there are words. 3. Each team has a different colored marker. 4. Each team must find items (articles, ads, etc.) in the paper that relate to each vocabulary word. Ex. They could apply the word "Catastrophic" to an article about hurricanes. 5. Then they write a sentence (with the colored marker) that connects the article to the word under that word on the chart paper. Ex. The hurricanes were catastrophic because they caused massive damage. 6. You can call time when you can see that one team has a posting under each word. 7. Each time has a chance to explain their postings. Teacher determines if posting is valid. 8. Team with the most number of valid postings wins.
