Lesson 1: This works great for a hands-on activity for tenth graders! I always stress that we tend to remember only 10% of what we read, 20% of what we hear, 30% of what we see, 50% of what we hear and see, 70% of what we say, and 90% of what we say and do. I plan activities that bring the students to the 90% level! Objective: Reinforce the importance of leads, thesis statement, and support in preparation for the 10th Grade FCAT Writing Hands-on activity: (Students have been practicing kinds of leads, thesis statements, and details in previous lessons.) 1. Have students cut out one news article that was of interest to them. 2. Identify the following by high-lighting:
Headline (title of the story meant to grab the reader´s attention) -- Blue
Lead paragraph (the thesis statement which tells the important information to be written about) -- Yellow
Body (supporting information or details) -- Orange
3. Ask for volunteers and have a few students present their findings to class. Discuss.
Additional activity: (This is always fun for high school students!) Students work in groups to write a news article about an event or incident that occurs in a children´s story or book. (Have 6-8 familiar children´s storybooks on hand.) Use the same color codes for high-lighting as above. Groups present to class.
Lesson 2: Parts of Speech Scavenger Hunt. Give Students Hand-out. Students read the newspaper and find 5 examples of each of the following: Vivid Verbs, Proper Nouns, Common Nouns, Adjectivies, Adverbs
