Getting “Center”ed

My students love using the newspaper to find nouns and verbs, or articles that pertain to current events or science findings. Moving from middle school to elementary school meant that CENTERS were now a major component of the reading curriculum. With so many different centers needed, I decided to continue using The News-Journal newspaper and create a user friendly notebook that was filled with five (5) fun and teachable centers with worksheets so that students’ work and progress could be monitored.

I developed a notebook filled with activities that covered Language Arts, Math, Science, Reading, and Phonics using the news and comics.

(1) These included using a variety of comic strips that contained blank bubbles for the students to create their own sentences while working on sequencing and text structure.

(2) They can then be a detective, look for clues, and come up with a possible solution that either matches Slylock Fox’s findings or becomes another logical conclusion.

(3) The students can also work on their phonics skills in Uncle Art’s Funland or (4) sharpen their math and science knowledge with the mini-math mystery or the Science Spot investigation.

(5) A graphic organizer leads the students to find the headline, author, theme, setting, characters, problem, and solution for a chosen news article. Then they decide what type of writing the article contains – persuasive, informative, or entertainment and whether it is a factual or an opinion story.

Learning can be fun and this newspaper-based center continues to be a vital part of my students’ learning environment.
