Bright Ideas Lesson Plans
FCAT for All
Every Monday I read the paper for that day. I choose one article
from each section and create questions that pertain to each article.
I then make copies for each student. They are given an entire
week to complete these questions after all other work is complete
or they may do it at home. I collect the completed papers on Friday.
I have done this activity for the past 4 years and find it quite beneficial towards the FCAT reading and math scores. The
newspaper provides interesting nonfiction reading material. By using
the questions, students must read the articles and find the
information being asked. I use various levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy when writing questions.
With graphing skills on FCAT Math, I have a graphing activity with
the sport scores. The Mini Page provides many learning experiences
in Math, Science and Social Studies.
Our FCAT scores at George Marks have been commendable in the
past and I bank on the use of The Daytona Beach News-Journal as another helpful resource in future FCAT scores. I share this technique with my school comrades and recently began sending a copy to NIE at the county level to share with others. Now the questions are posted online each Monday morning at nieworld.com.
