Wacky-Tacky News
Our class took a vote today to see which project we enjoyed the most using The News Journal. We call this “The Wacky –Tacky News” written and edited by Ms Moreno’s 3rd and 4th grade Exceptional Students.
Each student cut out four different articles from the newspaper, each with different interests and from different sections. They were instructed to highlight their favorite sentences in these articles ranging from pet adoption and local tornado and hurricane relief to sports and local cuisine.
Tomorrow we will be putting together our “Wacky–Tacky News Story” that will consist of favorite sentences from these student picked articles, put in proper order to create a story. This exercise has helped us have fun while we learn to identify the writing process and the use of story elements.
Pathway’s Wacky Tacky Olympics
(Authors: Shelby, Cecilia, Randal, Dakota, Ezekiel and Robert using articles and ideas from The News Journal)
It was a sunny day at the beach in Ormond. All of the contestants were gearing up for Pathway’s Wacky Tacky Olympic event of Parashoot Sailing on the ocean.
Chef Emeril was cooking his famous soup with wintergreens. It was lightly scented with tangy cheese and rosemary. The Florida Gators had taken the lead by claiming their seats on the beach. They came to root for Deonte who was a wide receiver. The Gators wore bathing suits of orange and blue. Their mascot the gator, was headed for the water to take a swim and see what he could eat.
It was time for the event to start. The judges were late. There was a big chill in Florida which froze the oranges. The FCAT students were still taking the FCAT and the “Wicked Sweet Croquet” players from the Casements, were just finishing their game. Lucky the ferret from Halifax Humane Society was on the phone with Jakarta, the 11 year old boy from Indonesia. Everyone was running late!
Dacia, the female Indy Car Racer, decided to fire up her engine, and went to pick up everyone for a ride to the event. She drove 110 mph, picking up all of the contestants and judges to bring to the beach for the start of the race.
At the beach, Eddie the manatee from Blue Springs was suited up and helping the baby slender monkey named Loris. Annabel the cat and Zag the dog (who wears coats) were ready to start.
Emeril the chef was full and the judges were ready to go!
“Ready…Set….Go!” They’re off!
Jakarta from Indonesia was in the lead. The wind was fierce. Eddie the manatee lost control and was picked up by the wind and flown back to Blue Springs.
Annabel the cat decided that she hated the water and dropped out of the race.
Dacia the female Indy Car Racer ran out of gas and hit the lifeguard stand. She finally decided to pay the toll for beach parking and left, blowing sand in the air.
Deonte, the wide receiver, was still hungry and left the water to talk to Chef Emeril.
Jakarta, the baby slender monkey and Zag the dog (who wears coats), were riding the waves with their parasails running into each other. It was a close race!
Suddenly, Jakarta felt a big bump and cried out, “Oh no! We forgot that there is an alligator here. Baby slender monkey stated, “We had better go ashore and call it a day. I am too small to be out here with an alligator. Zag the dog (who wears coats), looked around and did not know what had happened. They all headed towards the beach as their parasails fell to the sand.
The judges called it a tie and the FCAT students cooked up a “Bill of Fare”, including Bar–B–Que , breakfast, seafood, Italian and German food from the best restaurants in Volusia County.
Everybody enjoyed the day even though the race ended in a tie. They all were happy just to celebrate diversity month at Pathways Elementary School, and know that even though they were all different, everyone was equal. They were proud to be a part of the Pathways Wacky Tacky Olympics.
