Imaginary Obituaries

The majority of the students I teach find writing very difficult. However, I recently began using The Daytona Beach News- Journal as a writing tool for my students, and I began to see a new interest level arise. Last week, I had my students create a “fake obituary” using The Daytona Beach News-Journal as a guide.

Their assignment, however, was to write an obituary about a cartoon character who passed away. I then let their imaginations create the rest. I am submitting the below “death” notice about Buzz Lightyear from the Video, Toy Story, from my student Anthony Miranda (better known as AJ). I am extremely proud of his efforts.

Buzz Lightyear was 45 years of age when he died at Kennedy Space Center on Monday. His ship malfunctioned and crashed while still in Earth’s atmosphere during a Star Command mission. A memorial will be placed within the Kennedy Space Center in honor on his behalf, following a brief ceremony on Saturday.

Our best wishes go out to family and friends of this brave space pioneer. Co-workers stated that Buzz loved and admired his job as Kennedy Space Captain, a position that he held since he first learned how to fly. Buzz was a Space Ranger from the Intergalactic Alliance and for many years was stationed in the Gamma Quadrant.

As captain of the Alliance’s Team, Lightyear was known for his bravery and courage. He portrayed himself as “rather stiff” and tended to follow procedure at all costs. Buzz believed that “rules are the way people should live their life.” Though a great leader, at times he would be rather unemotional; one of his biggest character flaws.

On the other hand, however, he was a professional. Buzz was trained in several forms of martial arts and was a highly skilled warrior in hand-to-hand combat. Being in peak condition, Buzz was a perfect Space Ranger and a perfect role model to many.

Buzz was Emperor Zurg’s son, proof of which was shown in the Buzz Lightyear of Star Command and Toy Story 2 videos of his life. The Emperor’s family has requested the public respect their privacy at this time. Donations can be made to “The Buzz Lightyear Memorial Fund” c/o the Kennedy Space Center. He will be missed by all.
