Bright Ideas Lesson Plans
Bagging “Endangered” Species
This year, my students read the series “Endangered”. We used the chapters to study and discuss many of the reading skills being taught and also language arts skills, such as nouns, adjectives, verbs and writing skills. Students were told to use a highlighter many times to highlight the words that were nouns, pronouns, verbs and adjectives. We spoke about conversation and how the author used it in the story. This taught students how to use conversation in their writing assignments.
At the end of the series, students made an organizer using a paper grocery bag. The idea came from a book called “The Bag Ladies”. Students saved each chapter of the story as it was published, organizing it in order. Students then wrote a Chapter 15 to finish the story the way that they wanted to see it end. They also included five questions about the story using how, what, where, why and who.
On the front they created their own cover. Inside the front flap, they glued a picture of a Whooping Crane from the newspaper. On the back of their organizers they glued a picture of a Whooping Crane. They cut out related articles as they appeared in the newspaper and read them out loud.
On the left side of their organizers, they inserted information on the food chain and other endangered animals. Each student read the ending of his or her stories and the questions he or she had developed. I enjoyed their ideas. They all did a great job.
