Far Away Places

I teach fifth grade at Pierson Elementary. We use a newspaper to construct a weekly pamphlet. Students play the part of travel agents. They search the newspaper for articles taking place in different parts of the United States and the world. Unlike a travel agent, students use negative and positive facts about areas around the world. Each page in their pamphlet is designated to one area. I have found the majority of my students have become enriched with knowledge of areas they have had little to no connection with. We use the newspaper as a step. The articles and or pictures are cut out. Students then arrange the news clippings in an eye appealing fashion, utilizing organizational skills.

During the next step, students search the Internet, encyclopedia, and reference books for factual information about the area. Next, they include important information in their pamphlet that they think travelers should be informed of. Last, they arrange the pages. This step requires my students to learn placement of countries around the world because they start at one area and must work east to west to complete the pamphlet. This project helps students with geography as well as being aware of current events in the world they live.
