The 5th grade students are composing their own newspapers set in the Civil War era. The newspapers include comic strips, advertisements, articles, interviews, and even opinion columns based on our own News-Journal we receive in our classroom.

In Social Studies, students read an article and present a current event weekly. This is usually an article the students can relate to and explain in their own words. Students use focus skills learned in reading to do so. Some of the skills include compare/contrast, main idea, summarizing and paraphrasing, author’s purpose, fact and opinion.

Without our newspapers, our students would not receive the enrichment they truly deserve.
