The News as Science Experiments
The News-Journal is an invaluable tool in our Center oriented fifth grade classroom.
One of the students’ most favorite Reading Center activities is called: “Can you make an experiment out of that?”
The objective for the team of students is to peruse The News-Journal for an article that they feel they can turn into a science experiment by using the Scientific Process. Students use quite a bit of imagination (at times) forming their Hypothesis, Purpose, Materials, Procedure, Data, Results, Conclusion. They write up their “experiments” on what we call “mini-boards” which are smaller versions of our Science Fair project boards. Many times, the students pick the same article as another group just to “outdo” each other.
