Let it Rip
For the most part, our fifth graders use The News-Journal in centers and for independent reading. Our students love the Mini Page and the sports sections. My colleagues and I use many of the activities NIE has provided through the years. The following may be a variation of one of those. My reluctant readers particularly enjoy an activity called "Let It Rip".
I write a topic on chart paper, such as "Fact" and "Opinion". Students look through their newspapers and literally rip out an example of the topic, then glue it to the appropriate chart. They initial their example. Once an example is posted, no one else can use it. We play until everyone has found something. Then we discuss the answers. You can use it in every subject area and to teach just about any concept. The activity reaches visual (looking at the newspaper), kinesthetic (ripping), and auditory (discussion) learners. Thank you for providing the newspapers in our classrooms.
