Scientific Scavengers (In Print and Online)

Description: Students in grades 6-8 participate in a science themed scavenger hunt. There are two scavenger hunts. The first one is a computer-aided scavenger hunt that is conducted solely on the computer. Students use our district’s web resources to find scientific articles and answer questions about the articles/resources (see attached online scavenger hunt document). This activity helps students learn the approved district web resources and teaches them to locate scientific information online which will help then when they are creating science fair projects. The district approved web resources include Nieworld, SUNLINK, ProQuest K-12, and Culture Grams.

The second scavenger hunt is a hard resource scavenger hunt which utilizes the resources located throughout our media center. These resources include The News-Journal, books, and reference materials (e.g., encyclopedias, dictionaries, and atlases). Students are again asked to locate scientific information including biographies of scientists, science-based articles, and related science topics (see attached science scavenger hunt document).

Both of these activities take place in the media center with the help of primary teacher and media specialist. Students are asked to work together encouraging cooperative groups. These activities were tried this year before science fair projects were introduced and the outcome was a great success. Students were more comfortable with the layout of the media center, how to locate science materials, and researching scientific information online. Since this activity several students read The Daytona Beach News-Journal every day and search for links using nieworld.com.
