Bright Ideas Lesson Plans
The Marine Science Connection
1. Basic current events: Students must complete a current event assignment weekly. It must pertain to marine science in some way. Students who do not have access to the newspaper are allowed to use the classroom copies.
2. Informally debate controversial issues pertaining to marine science:
If an article that covers a controversial issue that pertains to marine science is found, students read it during the first 10 minutes of class.
The students then must write a 100 to 150 word summary of the
article along with a statement indicating which side of the issue they
agree with. They write a question they would like to ask students that support the opposite side of the issue. Students are then divided up
into two groups and we informally debate the issue using the questions
the students developed.
3. Weather and tide tracking: When teaching the topic of weather and tides, students use the information in the newspaper to track both.
