Newspaper Scrabble

Students use either The News-Journal or USA Weekend. This activity can be altered to address the needs of your students.

1. Students will cut out headlines from the newspaper or USA Weekend (preferably one from each section). These headlines will be cut into individual words at this point.
2. Students will be placed into groups or teams. Each student will pick out 7 words from the pile of headlines (individual words). There are no individual tiles/letters in this game. The rules will mimic Scrabble rules with the exception of letters for words.
3. Students will then use a Scrabble board to play Newspaper Scrabble. They must match up the words from the headlines to create their move and earn the most possible points. This actually takes a lot of critical thinking. The trick is to strategically place the words on the board and match letter for letter when adding to the board.
4. Of course, as the same with Scrabble, the student/team with the most points wins the game.
This game is harder than you think. It is great to use in the classroom when you need a challenge. It involves critical thinking and strategy.
