The Food News Report
Each week my students in Culinary III are required to do a “FOOD NEWS REPORT”. They are to find an article in the newspaper or Internet that is related to food in some form. They are to show the article and then do a summary and report each Friday.
When we find a particularly good subject we then declare it “debatable” and on the following Friday we set up a semi-formal debate. Some of the subjects we have debated are “Should our government, State or Federal, legislate what we are allowed to eat or have as ingredients in our food?” Another one: “Should prisoners be given the right to have KOSHER foods as part of their meals while incarcerated and cost the taxpayer extra money, particularly when they get religion in prison?”
What this has done for our senior culinary students, is show them that food is all around us in the news all the time. It has shown them that no matter if they join the Hospitality industry FOOD in some form will affect their everyday lives. It has also made them CRITICALLY think about the world around them and how food affects it and influences other parts of their lives.
