Macbeth and Unnatural Things Collages
While studying Macbeth, students learned about the foreshadowing device used in Shakespeare as the harbinger of bad things to come. To upset the natural order of things (i.e. "kill a king") meant that unnatural things would occur. As in Macbeth, the slaughter of King Duncan brought about a "rough night": chimneys blown down, screams of death in the night, horses breaking out of their stalls and biting each other, etc. The students used The News-Journal to create an "unnatural things collage." Clipping headlines, pictures, and pieced together bylines, the students created a collage of unusual or bizarre things that occur daily around the world. Students enjoy seeing how many truly unusual or unexpected events actually do occur.
