Bright Ideas Lesson Plans
Holiday Shopping SpreeI have a math lesson on Holiday Shopping. Two weeks before the holiday I have the students bring in merchandise pages from the newspaper. One week before the holiday (or holiday vacation) I have the students cut out eight to the items from the newspaper and paste them on a plain 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of paper. Each item has to have the price listed. When they are finished with the pasted sheet, they are given a second sheet with the heading: Holiday Shopping. Instructions: using the pasted page, fill in the item, quantity (amount) purchased, price, and find the total by multiplying. Find the complete total by adding. Using the pasted page, fill in the item, quantity (amount) purchased, price, and find the total by multiplying. Find the complete total of all the items by adding: QTY - ITEM - PRICE - TOTAL The students greatly enjoyed this exercise. They forgot they were doing math. They liked making their individual choices (sort-of like "being in charge"). They liked reading about the merchandise and certainly letting parents know what merchandise appealed to them. This activity addresses vocabulary, spelling, addition, multiplication, as well as individual choices and comparing decision making with peers. This activity is on the student´s own level and originates from them. A positive response is guaranteed! Betty Davidson Chisholm Elementary
