Current Events Team Quiz Bowl

Teams of four to five are assigned by the teacher, attempting to equalize the groups for the first time. Only the caption may give the answer. All questions are gathered by the teacher during the week from the news journal. Categories include national, international, sports, television and movies, finance and potpourri.

Within a 45- minute period several rounds of questions can be asked and answered. points are awarded by 10 point increments in blocks relating to the number of teams. Five teams - five ten point, five twenty, five thirty, etc. Double points are awarded to a team if it is the only to get the correct answer. Double points are awarded on the second try for any question. Any question not answered in two tries is a 50 point bonus question and is posted until next week. It is asked first, the use of bonus questions is to foster research skills. The team to reach 1000 points is declared the winner and each of the members becomes a captain of the new teams which are chosen by them.

The game requires students to read the paper on a regular basis, cooperate with their teammates, practice decision making skills, and use critical thinking skills.

The students enjoy the competition and team concept. This will keep Friday attendance at high levels throughout the year.
