Journal Jeopardy

There are six categories from which the students can choose to state their question: FRONT PAGE/NATION/EDITORIAL/SPORTS/AREA/THE VOLUSIAN.

The students enjoy being able to demonstrate their knowledge and detail reading in an atmosphere of fun and friendly competition, rather than being given the traditional test. The category headings are varied and the students can create their own VOCABULARY/GO DO/etc. Each student row becomes a group and the first person who has their hand up from that group is allowed to state their question after i post the statement. The students who answers the question correctly choose the next category. Group points are tallied rather than individual.

Because of the variety of categories from which to choose, a greater number of students are able to demonstrate their knowledge in an area of the paper that they prefer or particularly remember reading.

I have taught English for fourteen years and have continually noticed that many students either did not read the paper at all, or only read the Sports page and the cartoons. I also realized that when they did read the paper, they were not paying attention to many of the significant details contained in the articles. After playing Journal Jeopardy, their essay writing improved. The students started including who, what, where, when and how in their essays and became more proficient at selecting details pertinent to their topic or thesis.

I look forward to reading other creative ways to use the newspaper in the classroom.
