Bright Ideas Lesson Plans
Stump the PanelOnce a week the students read the newspaper silently. They are told ahead of time which section of the newspaper will be emphasized. They are instructed to skim and scan-also, read for details. (These skills are difficult for high school students as they make the transition to high school.) Each student must write three questions to ask the panel. (This enforces writing skills on a higher level.) The panel tries to answer each question and we keep score. The winning side (panel or the rest of the group) receives an award of juice or fruit. The students love this activity and I have no lack of volunteers to be on the panel! I work with low-level students and it has proven to be a great motivational activity to promote reading. Pat McGraw
