Reading/Environmental Print

I am submitting my idea for using environmental print from advertisements in my classroom. I hope this summary is good enough! Thank you for making me aware of this contest.

Before entering Kindergarten, many of the children are told what they will learn in school from older siblings, parents, and other important people in their lives. One of the things they are told they will learn is how to read. I don´t want to disappoint them, so on the first day of school I show them they are already readers.

Most of the children deny it and don´t believe me when I tell them they already know how to read. I then show them a slide show of environmental print. I took pictures of store signs, stop signs, and logos that they would be familiar with. They are amazed when they see the "Golden Arches" with the McDonald´s under it and they know what it says! I then tell them to find things in newspapers they can read for homework.

I explain the homework to the parents to get their support and help. When the children find a word they recognize, they bring it to class. We all make a big production about what a great reader they are.

We also find out if anyone else in class can read the same word ( usually an advertising logo). Then we place it on our "Word Wall" bulletin board. We continue to practice reading these words.

As the year progresses and the children begin to read "real" words, I encourage them to bring in more words from the newspaper to put on the "Word Wall".

The children have a great time learning and felling successful in reading!
