Bright Ideas Lesson Plans
Stamps and Writing: The N-J as a springboardMany articles and features which appear in the newspaper can be used to stimulate writing activities. The "Eye-Openers" feature about new stamps honoring classic boogeymen in the September 30, 1997 edition of The News Journal provided such an opportunity. After reviewing the photo and caption, [Dracula, Frankenstein, the Mummy STAMPS] the students discussed other famous "monsters". We brainstormed ideas for other (perhaps more deserving) topics to be commemorated by issuing a stamp. The students were assigned the task of selecting who or what they each thought would be worthy of this honor and writing a brief essay justifying their choice. Among the topics were: Mother Theresa and the bald eagle; which I have included with this entry. "I think that the bald eagle should be on a stamp because, it is the national bird. A symbol of strength and power. The eagle is a very intelligent animal that should be honored and respected throughout the nation. We should be the ones to help keep the eagle alive and well, and a stamp would be the perfect way to remind people to help keep the eagles from becoming extinct." ---B. M. "I think Mother Theresa should be put on a stamp because, she was a strong, heroic, passionate person who cared for the homeless, and orphanaged children, and many others. She touched the lives of many people. She won the Noble Peace Prize. I hope her legacy will never be forgotten by the American people, and the world."--D.W. Gerald Kempf Seville
