Bright Ideas Lesson Plans
Newspaper NotebookObjective: The student will become familiar with the newspaper. The student will provide examples of specific items found in a newspaper. Lesson: My students are given a copy of the enclosed packet to complete. They are responsible for providing an example of each of the following: A sports story A local news story A state news story A national news story A foreign news story An advertisement A letter to the editor A "want ad" An editorial A cartoon They then must place the story/item they select on the specified page in the packet. They are "encourage" to illustrate the story/item on the page to indicate their understanding and to enhance the packet. They must also complete the first page which asks them what they have learned or gained from doing this assignment. I give extra points if they have their parents sign the page. I have found that many parents like to get involved in this project. I do supply a newspaper for students that need one. I have found that students really enjoy doing this "hands on" activity and it helps them find their way "around" a newspaper. Ellen Taylor Deltona Middle School
