Bright Ideas Lesson Plans
Value of PlaceActually, I´ve been using the ideas in the newspaper activity book that NIE sent me a while ago, such as finding the day of the week, the date, an interesting photograph, etc. But here are two ideas that I´m planning to use soon: The first graders are learning about place value. The students will use the Sports section to find five single-digit numbers. They will circle the greatest number. They will then write those numbers in ascending order. They will do the same with five double-digit numbers. They will also find two photographs showing a sport played, and will write a title for each one. Our class knows that numbers are used for many different things. Using the classified, they will find 1) a telephone number, 2) the price of an item, 3) an address, 4) a number that tells the time of day, and 5) a date. They will cut out each entry and paste it on paper. Then they will match the label (address, telephone number, date, time, and price) with the number and share their finds with their classmates.
