Bright Ideas Lesson PlansWhy learn Algebra?Several of the students in my Algebra 1 class have stated "why learn Algebra?". The newspaper has helped solve this situation. We take job classifications and find the ads that have the salary for the position then find out how much money they will get if the person gets to work 40 hours, 30 hours, 20 hours and 10 hours. Then we try to find out how much a week the person can spend on an apartment, car, insurance, etc. using algebraic formulas for all this then they realize that they may have to know something. We also will be talking taxes, lights, and water bills. How much do they have left for food and parties and clothes? What happens if they are supporting a wife or husband and CHILDREN?
