Using the Newspaper

Grade: 4th or 5th
Students May work in groups of 3 or individually but they each turn in a paper.

Using the newspaper, have the students go on a scavenger hunt to see how many articles/stories or community events they can find related to a certain culture.

On a piece of paper have them write down how many articles they found. Then they need to pick one and either write a ½ page about the article/story OR if they picked a community event they can tell you WHO? WHAT? WHEN? WHERE? WHY? And the reason they picked the article and if it relates to them personally.

This activity may be presented in front of the class, could be used as a writing activity for a unit in Social Studies/Geography.

Could also be displayed on the bulletin board with the unit about that country.
