I will begin by asking the class if they have heard of any important happenings that are going on in the world. I will write down the topics that students have heard about. I will then have the students flip through the newspaper that is in front of them. I will then ask them, "Based on the titles of these articles, what is happening today?" I will also ask the students if they saw the news yesterday, if so, what were some of the main topics discussed? B. Developmental Procedures- In the next part of this activity I will have the students in pairs. Each pair will choose an article out of the newspaper. Articles have to be something that is a somewhat major issue or topic that is happening in the world or the U.S., meaning police beats are not a good text piece to choose. I will then pass out a worksheet with the following questions on it: (1) Write headline on the line below. (2) What do you think the article will be about based on the title? (3) What happened in the article? (4) Who was involved? (5) Where did it occur? (6) When did it happen? (7) How did it happen? (8) Why did it happen? These questions are to be answered during and after the students read the article. C. Closure- After students are finished answering the questions I will gather the class back together as a whole and we will have a class discussion on what everyone found. I will ask students questions like, "Do you agree with what happened in this article?" Questions will really be based on what topic the students chose to read about. VI. ASSESMENT Students will have a homework assignment of either watching the news or listening to it on the radio. Students will need to look for further developments on the story that they read about during class. Their assignment is to summarize what the news story was about in a 2-3-paragraph report. VII.
