Coordinates on a Grid

Grade Level: 2
Subject: Math

I. TOPIC:

Math- Coordinates on a grid

II. OBJECTIVES:

Content Objectives
- The students will locate specific places on a coordinate grid with 100% accuracy.
- They will identify the coordinates of at least 5 points on a grid.

Language Objectives
- They will learn the written vocabulary associated with coordinate graphs
- They will associate their counting numbers with written words in order to reach their desired point on the graph.

III. MATERIALS

TV guide section of the newspaper; Paper; Pencils

IV. TEACHING PROCEDURES:

A. Introduction: Teacher will start out by asking them what their favorite shows are on TV. Then, ask them if they know what time those programs are on. Next, teacher will ask them how they know that is the time of the show. Teacher will get a variety of answers but will tell them that we are going to learn how to find out the time of any show they wished to see.

B. Developmental Procedures: Teacher will start out by showing them how to look for their favorite shows: asking questions such as "What channel is your favorite show on?" and "What time does it start?" Teacher will demonstrate how to make their two lines meet so that they come up with a single point. Next, ask them questions such as "How?, and Why?" that occurred. Have them look up the coordinates for their five favorite shows and make a "TV Guide" of their own favorite shows. Ask them to look at their completed grids and ask them questions in a reverse pattern looking for comprehension. For example, ask them if the could look at the guide and tell me the time and channel for the Rugrats.

C. Closure: Review quickly the main concepts that we learned that day as well as reiterate the connection between math and everyday life. Allow them to ask any questions they might have.

V. LESSON EVALUATION:

Students will turn in a completed "TV Guide" of their favorite programs and teacher will check for understanding and return.

VI. ANTICIPATED USE OF TIME:

1. 10 minutes: Introduction and oral explanation of the coordinate graph. Answer when called on. Think of their top 5 favorite shows.

2. 30 minutes: Walk around help out. Give a short demonstration of what you want them to find. Pass out newspaper, TV guides, in pairs, have the students locate specifics.

3. 5 minutes: Wrap it up and ask if they understand this coordination between math and everyday life. Students should ask any questions they weren´t clear on.

VII. SUNSHINE STATE STANDARDS:

MA.C.3.1- The student uses coordinate geometry to locate objects in both two and three-dimensional objects and to describe objects algebraically

MA.A.1.1- The student understands the different ways numbers are represented and used in the real world.
