Business Entrepreneurs

Objective: Students of the fourth grade will use The News-Journal to demonstrate accounting and advertising proficiency with 100% accuracy.

Materials: The News-Journal, Pencils, Paper, Creativity

Teaching Procedures: Students will become young business consultants trying to patent and market their own product via The News-Journal. The class will be divided into groups consisting of four students and each group member will be assigned an individual task. There will be a student secretary, treasurer, chief executive officer, and assistant chief executive officer. All group members will search the journal together, looking for a product to patent and market. As the group begins to plan their business strategies they must be careful to adhere to a fixed budget of $1,000 that should cover the cost of advertising and supplies. The goal of this activity is for the students to use The News-Journal as a business and marketing tool. Students must call upon their cooperative learning skills to work as a solid, unified team. They will search each pages of the newspaper to get a product idea based on the interests and needs of the public. After determining which product to patent, the group has the task of marketing and budgeting effectively. At the end of the activity, each group will be asked to turn in a business log explaining why and how they made each business decision.

I think this is an effective activity because it involves integrating the News Journal into the interdisciplinary curriculum. There are several different subject areas covered in this activity including math, social studies, and economics. Students will enjoy participating in this activity because it is interactive and engaging. Each group member has a specific task that is important to the group´s success, and that will keep each student´s motivation level high.
