Estimation Activity

Here is a fun estimation activity that students in the intermediate grades can do using the sales ads from a grocery store. The activity can be a timed game that allows students to practice their estimation skills using the shopping advertisement to shop for groceries. The activity should be done in groups in competetion with one another.

1. Use a shopping list of items from sale paper to be purchased.

2. Use estimation to keep a running total of items to be purchased.

3. Avoid over spending.

Procedure:

1. Give an identical shopping list and grocery ad from paper to 2 or 3 groups.

2. Give students a money limit and set timer for 1-2 minutes.

3. Upon signal, students will select itmes from the grocery ad that appear on their list and as many other items as possible without going over their limit.

4. When timer rings, have students add up the purchases. If they estimated carefully and did not go over their limit, they get one point for each item they purchased. No points for groups who go over their limit.

5. Begin the process again with next group of students by giving them a new grocery list.

6. Continue the activity until each student has had a chance to participate.

7. Keep a running total of each group´s points.
