Safety Rules Match-a-Roo

This week´s standards:

Students understand how rules and expectations set for them at home, in school, on playgrounds, and in their neighborhoods are related to broader principles of responsibility. (Social Studies: Civics)

Students understand that safety and security are basic needs of humans. Students´ understanding includes following safety rules for home and school, avoiding injury, and knowing where to go for help. (Science: Personal Health)

Activities:

1. Draw a picture of yourself going to school. Write a sentence telling the safety rule you are following in your picture.

2. Find these safety items in the newspaper and circle each one with a marker: something you could ride to school, something you can use to communicate with your parents, and someone who helps you obey safety rules. Share your answers with friends.

3. Interview three school friends. Ask them how they come to school. Ask each one to tell you two things they do to be safe while they are traveling to school. How are their answers the same? How are they different?

4. Find a school safety situation where you have to show these abilities: (a) you have to watch carefully, (b) you have to wear something to keep you safe, (c) you have to be patient, (d) you have to be a good passenger in a car, and (e) you have to listen to someone else.

5. Fold a piece of paper lengthwise. Now look at the different safety sections in today´s Mini Page: riding on school buses, riding in cars, walking to school and cycling to school. Select one rule from each section. Copy the rule on the left side of your paper. On the right side of the paper write one or two sentences explaining why you should follow the rule. What could happen if you didn´t follow that rule?
