Bud the Cross-Country Dog

This week´s standards:

Students understand the role of technology in communications, transportation, information-processing, weapons development, or other areas. (Social Studies: Power, Authority and Governance)

Activities:

1. Draw a picture of a pet you know riding in some form of transportation -- a car, bus, train, boat or airplane. Write a story about the pet´s adventure.

2. Find five modern items in the newspaper that would have helped Dr. Jackson and Bud on their trip. Explain why you think these items would have been useful.

3. Look in the classified ads section of the newspaper to find a car you would use to take a long trip. Explain why that model would be a good choice.

4. Pretend Dr. Jackson, Sewall Crocker and Bud were making a cross-country trip today. Think about the problems they had in the early days of the automobile and how travel has changed. Rewrite their story, showing how their experiences would be different.

5. Use resource books and the Internet to learn more about the history of the automobile. Use these questions to guide your research: How were the first automobiles different from automobiles today? What different kinds of fuel were used in early cars? How did Henry Ford revolutionize the auto industry? When were different comfort/luxury features first used in automobiles -- such as automatic transmissions, radios, air conditioning, electric lights and seat belts? What different fuels are used in automobiles today?
