African Masquerades
Issue 43
Oct. 16-22

This week´s standards:

Students identify works of art as belonging to particular cultures, times and places. (Visual Arts)

Activities:

1. Design a mask for a holiday your family celebrates.

2. Find five items in the newspaper you could use to make a real mask. Explain how you would use each item.

3. Look in the sports pages of the newspaper for teams named for animals. Draw masks for three of the animals.

4. Which African people (a) make masks from gourds, (b) create costumes for holidays, and (c) make masks and costumes for carnivals?

5. Use resource books and the Internet to learn about a famous American costumed event, the Mummers Parade in Philadelphia on New Year´s Day. Use these questions to guide your research: Who are the Mummers? What kinds of costumes are worn by different groups in the parade? What materials are used to create the masks and costumes? What kinds of music and dances are used in the parade? Why is this parade so popular?
