Holiday Lights

This week´s standards:

Students understand the role of technology in communications, transportation, information-processing, weapons development, or other areas. (Social Studies: Power, Authority and Governance)

Students develop abilities of technological design, understanding about science and technology, and abilities to distinguish between natural objects and objects made by humans. (Science: Science and Technology)

Activities:

1. Draw a picture of your home or street the way you would like to see it decorated with Christmas lights.

2. Make a list of five differences between early Christmas lights and modern lights.

3. Draw a lightbulb on a piece of paper. Now find pictures of items in the newspaper that use very small lights. Cut them out and paste them around your lightbulb.

4. What person (a) became the founder of Lionel trains, (b) developed the first Christmas tree lights, (c) asked for lights on the White House Christmas tree, (d) founded the American Ever-Ready flashlight company, and (e) made the first public display of Christmas-time lights?

5. What is the next step in Christmas lights? What will the next generation of Christmas lights do and look like? Design a new kind of Christmas light. Write a paragraph describing your light and how it works. Then write a newspaper ad for your new product.
