Meet Poet Ted Kooser Issue 16 April 16-22This week´s standards:Students comprehend and respond to a variety of images and text. Students identify forms and elements of literature. (Language Arts: Reading) Activities:1. Pick one of the poems in today´s Mini Page. Draw a picture to go with the poem. Write two lines from the poem under your picture. 2. Make a list of words that end in "-ake." Now use the words to create a rhyming poem. 3. Read the poem "Dancing on a Rainbow" in today´s Mini Page. How does the character in the poem feel about reading class? What words does the poem use to tell you how the character feels? 4. Look at an ad in the newspaper. Circle the individual words that describe the product in the ad. Now use those words to create a poem about the product. 5. One special language device poets often use is metaphor. A person or thing is directly compared to something else. In "Dancing on a Rainbow," the reading teacher is called "a light in darkness" and "the twinkle of a star." In "Some Things Don´t Make Any Sense at All," the speaker is called a "sugarplum" and "a lamb." Make a list of your family members and friends. Describe each one using a metaphor. Dr. Sherrye D.
