Flags of Our States
Issue 23
June 4-10

This week´s standards:

Students understand that artists select and use subject matter, symbols and ideas to communicate meaning. (Art)

Students recognize national and state symbols and traditions, such as flags, seals and holidays. (Social Studies: Civics)

Activities:

1. Ask five different family members or friends to name something they like very much a favorite color, plant, animal or activity. Now design a family flag using all of the items.

2. Track news stories from different states in your newspaper for one week. Put a check by the name of a state and flag each time you see a news story from that state. Which state had the most stories? Why do you think there are so many stories from that state?

3. Which flags include the following items from their states: (a) plants, (b) animals, (c) people, (d) different cultures and (e) state names?

4. Which state flag, other than your own, do you like the most? Write a paragraph describing the flag and explaining why you like it.

5. Use resource books and the Internet to learn more about your state´s flag. Use these questions to guide your research: When was the current flag adopted? What do the symbols on the flag represent? Who designed the flag? Were there earlier flags for your state? What were they like? Why did your state make a change?
