Ten local pupils’ favorite place is now at the state level.
The pupils have all been recognized recently by the Volusia County Council of PTAs’ Reflections Program as county-wide winners.
Reflections is a contest that encourages pupils to be creative and submit original entries in literature, photography, film, music and several other areas relating to a designated theme.
This school year’s theme was “My Favorite Place.”
Three students were given Awards of Excellence at the state level. They were Makayla Mitchell of Pine Trail Elementary for Intermediate Literature; Sheldon Hawthorne of Ormond Beach Middle for Middle Music; and Allison Senne of Port Orange Elementary for Intermediate Photography.
Students receiving Awards of Merit were: Basia Welter of Samsula Elementary for Primary Literature; Christian Lewis of Westside Elementary for Primary Music; Joshua Albert of Creekside Elementary for Middle Music; Sheldon Hawthorne of Ormond Beach Middle for Middle Photography; Sara Peterson of Woodward Avenue Elementary for Intermediate Visual Arts; Marla Grant of Spirit Elementary for Intermediate Visual Arts; Elyce Loutzenhiser of Hinson Middle for Middle Visual Arts; and Juan Halleran of Port Orange Elementary for Primary Film.
The pupils’ work will travel throughout the state, according to Shannon Hay, a reading coach at Westside Elementary School.
Hay is also the corresponding secretary and Reflections chairwoman for the Volusia County Council PTA.
The work will also be displayed at future PTA conventions. The state convention will be in November at the Daytona Beach Hilton, Hay said.
